Sewing Machine Vs Lakota - The grudge match

"Wind the bobbin up
Wind the bobbin up
Pull, snap, tangle, f*ck crap..."

If you spend any time singing nursery rhymes with a toddler you may be familiar with the above ditty, which I have doctored only slightly. You may also have surmised that my sewing machine and I are not the closest of friends. I would like to change this, really I would, although as I've just taken up crochet I imagine the machine will be left to lick its wounds under the dining table for a little longer. However, I did finally manage to come up with this bunting for boy2's bedroom, which I have cunningly a) hung very high up, and b) photographed from a distance, thus making me look vaguely competent. This is my submission to the Monthly Make challenge, run by Annie at The Felt Fairy

Ta-Dah! Ingredients include bondaweb and swearing. No toys were harmed.

My crochet practise currently resembles a half made dishcloth - for a mouse. I would show you the photographic evidence but I've realised my crap photos are always the ones that show up on other people's blog lists, and I'm frankly too embarrassed. Still, I shall stumble on, as this is one craft I really want to master.

Is there anything you're desperate to learn or achieve this year? If it's craft related, have you seen my giveaway over here?

  1. Hi Lakota, the bunting certainly looks great! i guess we are our worst critics, i feel the same, that i think i take pics ABIT better than crafting :) but i honestly think the buntings turned out awesome with the cars and hearts and star on them, i'm sure you boys love em! i dont know how to crochet and I just learnt how to knit for beginner and already jumped to cross stitch, still suck at them and now Im saving my pennies to buy a sewing machine though i've never used a sewing machine in my life and no idea how! :) anyways, thanks for the input on St.David, I will have to remember that next year! still new to this country and learning its culture and my husband's religion :)

  2. Hi Lakota, you little bunting queen you! It looks fabulous! Love it.

I'm having a torrid time, to say the least, with my sewing machine and the bloody sewing pattern I posted about yesterday. I'm gonna do for that sewing pattern I really am. Aaargh!

Anyway, sorry for the rant. Good luck with the crochet and I'm convinced you will master it. If I can muster a granny square, anyone can, believe me. Byeeee xxxx

  3. hehe, My sewing machine died a while back so I'm waiting to be able to buy and all singing and dancing one. The bunting does look great though - i took the easy option and bought"handmade" bunting from ebay for my boys room, no one need know it wasnt me who handmade it and to be honest when i say its handmade everyone assumes it was me - mwahaha! 5. That bunting is brilliant, I wish I had the patience to make something like that. Oh, and that song, I've been singing it over 15 years and I much prefer your version!
I make greetings cards using cardboard and old 'Next' catalogues. The paper is good quality and all the patterns and colours make for striking collages. I hope to make some frameable collages with the catalogues and buttons soon, I'll let you know how I get on...

  6. That's a nice bit of bunting, that.

I approach my sewing machine in manner of lion tamer carrying chair approaching lion in cage.

  10. I love that bunting, you have done brilliantly.
I have a love and hate relationship with my sewing machine, I don't think I'll ever get over the blouse I made yesterday. After several unpicking nightmares it's just perfect, believe me if I can do it you can. xxx
PS A mouse's dishcloth had me weeping with laughter. I managed a shoddy chain and abdandoned all hope.

  15. LOL, we sing that at nursery - hope your lyrics don't stick in my head! But I know exactly what you mean. The sewing machine is not my friend either.

The bunting looks gorgeous though, x

  16. I am familiar with that rhyme, my cousins used to sing it all the time! So frustating when your machine goes wrong persistently and you cant figure out why. Your bunting looks fab though - thank you for your comment on my blog! x
